through envelopes, gum wrappers and pennies, looking for the keys I am always losing. Shake my purse, hear the chime of metal on metal-- just a few dimes.
At ten, I watched my mother kneel sobbing in the grave-grass, searching for her keys. My black patent-leather shoes unshined, stained with the soil of a hundred faces. Twenty minutes on my knees with her, not sad, but scared of being lost, left behind.
This is my life now; a haphazard heap of ashtrays, receipts, an impatient suitcase and a legacy of things tha
